Depth Psychology Services: Jungian Therapy, Shadow Work & More

Clinical Services · Areale Counseling & Wellness · Midtown Manhattan, NYC

Six expressions of one clinical truth. The unconscious psyche is not a problem to be managed. It is an intelligence to be met.

Every service at Areale Counseling & Wellness is an expression of a single depth psychological framework — Jungian in orientation, rigorous in practice, and rooted in the understanding that genuine healing begins where conscious strategies end.

A place for self-discovery, emotional health and healing®

The unifying clinical framework

Depth psychology is not one modality among many. It is a way of seeing.

Most therapeutic practices offer a menu of modalities — CBT, DBT, mindfulness, solution-focused work — and match the patient to the technique. Areale Counseling & Wellness operates differently. There is one framework: depth psychology. Every clinical encounter, regardless of the patient’s presenting concern, is understood through the lens of the unconscious psyche, the individuation process, and the long tradition of Jungian and post-Jungian thought.

This coherence is not a limitation. It is what makes the work possible. When the framework is settled, the clinician is free to give full attention to what the patient is actually bringing — without reaching for a different technique for each presenting symptom, and without treating symptoms as the primary clinical reality.

Founder Andreau Charles’s doctoral training at Pacifica Graduate Institute — the institution that has most rigorously carried the depth psychological tradition into contemporary clinical practice — is the formation through which every service at Areale is conducted. It is not a methodology applied from the outside. It is a way of seeing that is now inseparable from how the work is done.

“What we do not make conscious emerges later as fate.”

— Carl Gustav Jung

The Pacifica Graduate Institute Tradition

Pacifica Graduate Institute is an accredited graduate school whose entire academic identity is organized around the depth psychological tradition — Jungian, archetypal, psychodynamic, and mythological. It is the institution that produced James Hillman’s archetypal psychology, Fanny Brewster’s Africanist depth psychology, and Clarissa Pinkola Estés, among the defining scholarly figures of the post-Jungian canon.

Training at Pacifica does not produce clinicians who know about depth psychology. It produces clinicians for whom depth psychology is the constitutive lens of their clinical seeing. That is the formation Andreau Charles brings to every patient encounter at Areale Counseling & Wellness.

Clinical services

The six areas of depth psychological work at Areale

Each service below is a distinct entry point into the same depth psychological work. The presenting concern differs. The framework is the same — and it is the framework that makes the work go somewhere.

01

Foundational Framework

Depth Psychology & Jungian Therapy

The clinical foundation of all work at Areale. Shadow, individuation, archetype, the Self — applied as rigorous clinical methodology, not philosophical metaphor. If you are not yet certain which service is the right entry point, begin here. Depth psychology is both a standalone clinical offering and the framework within which all other services operate. Includes the six stages of depth psychological progression: from the encounter with the persona through individuation as a lived orientation.

02

For High-Achieving Professionals

Therapy for Professionals

For professionals navigating the psychological cost of success — burnout, the double performance, impostor syndrome, identity fragmentation, and the persistent sense that the self constructed to achieve has never quite felt like their own. The work operates at the level of the unconscious psyche: not symptom management, but understanding what produced the symptom and what the psyche has been attempting to communicate through it. Particular clinical attention to the dynamics of conditional belonging, ancestral formation, and the narcissistic wound beneath achievement.

03

The False Self & What Lies Beneath

Shadow Work & Narcissistic Wound Recovery

For people who have constructed a life around a version of themselves shaped more by early wounding and adaptive necessity than by genuine becoming. Shadow work is the clinical process of bringing what has been disowned, suppressed, or refused into conscious relationship with the ego — not to become darker, but to become whole. Narcissistic wound recovery works with the False Self — the adaptive persona built to secure love and recognition through performance — and toward the more authentic self beneath it. Rooted in Jungian analytical psychology, self psychology, and the archetypal tradition.

04

For Artists, Musicians, Writers & Creatives

Therapy for Artists & Creatives

For artists and creative professionals whose interior life is both the source of their work and the territory that most needs tending. Depth psychology — and Hillman’s archetypal tradition in particular — is the only clinical framework that understands the creative process on its own terms: not as a behavior to be modified, but as a psychological act rooted in the unconscious psyche, serving the individuation of both the artist and the culture they work within. Creative block, identity fragmentation, the cost of commercializing the interior, and the psychological weight of living close to the unconscious psyche are all addressed from within this tradition.

05

The Language of the Unconscious Psyche

Dream Analysis

Dreams are the most direct and honest communication from the unconscious psyche to the conscious ego. At Areale, dream analysis is not an optional supplement to therapy — it is a primary clinical methodology, integrated into the depth psychological work from the beginning. Jungian dream analysis is distinguished from popular dream interpretation: the work is not to match symbols to a universal dictionary, but to discover what this image means in this psyche, at this moment in the individuation process. Recurring dreams, nightmares, big dreams, and shadow dreams are worked with as primary clinical material. Informed by Jung, Hillman, Brewster, and Andreau Charles’s own doctoral research at Pacifica Graduate Institute.

06

Identity, Desire & the Performed Self

LGBTQ+ Affirming Depth Therapy

For LGBTQ+ individuals navigating the weight of a self that has been managed, hidden, or performed for so long that the real one has become difficult to reach — even in private. Depth psychology works with the unconscious architecture built around the original wound: the False Self constructed to survive, the internalized shame deposited before language, the desire that was never permitted to simply exist. Affirming does not mean performative. It means your experience is held with full clinical seriousness — wherever you are in the process of understanding yourself.

Who we serve

High-Achieving Professionals

Finance, law, medicine, academia, technology, and the arts. What unites our professional patients is not their industry — it is a particular psychological experience: the distance between the self they present and the self they live with, and the question of whether there is another way to exist. These are people who have succeeded by every external measure and arrived at an inner life that does not match the outer one.

Artists & Creative Professionals

Visual artists, musicians, writers, performers, designers, and creative professionals navigating corporate life. The artist lives closer to the unconscious psyche than most — drawing from it, shaped by it, sometimes overwhelmed by it. Depth psychology is the only clinical tradition that understands this proximity as vocation rather than pathology, and that works with the creative psyche on its own terms rather than attempting to normalize it.

The tradition that informs every service

Six primary scholars. One living depth psychological tradition.

Areale Counseling & Wellness is informed by the full breadth of the depth psychological canon — from its Jungian foundations through its archetypal, Africanist, and indigenous expressions. These six primary scholars are not references. They are the intellectual formation through which every clinical encounter is conducted.
“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.”

— Carl Gustav Jung

“Each life is formed by its unique image, an image that is the essence of that life and calls it to a destiny. As the force of fate, this image acts as a personal daimon, an accompanying guide who remembers your calling.”

— James Hillman · The Soul's Code

“Sooner or later, the constructed edifice of the false self will erode, even collapse, and then one enters the dark night of the soul.”

— James Hollis, Ph.D. · Living with Borrowed Dust

“When the African American client arrives for psychoanalysis, this is the sorrow of generations that arrives with them — there is no way to leave it outside the door.”

— Fanny Brewster, Ph.D. · African Americans and Jungian Psychology: Leaving the Shadows

“The purpose of the healer is not to impose healing on people, but to call people into the healing that is already within them — and within the community that surrounds them.”

— Malidoma Patrice Somé, Ph.D. · The Healing Wisdom of Africa

“The dream does not belong to any single civilization. It arises before history, before the consulting room, before any theory capable of naming it — and it continues to arise nightly in the depths of every sleeping human soul.”

— Andreau Charles, LCSW · Dreams as a Cultural Bridge to the Unconscious, Pacifica Graduate Institute, 2023

The institutional formation behind this work

Pacifica Graduate Institute Where the tradition lives.

Pacifica Graduate Institute is an accredited graduate school whose entire academic identity is organized around the depth psychological tradition. Founded on the motto animae mundi colendae gratia — for the sake of tending soul in and of the world — Pacifica has carried the depth psychological lineage from Jung forward into contemporary clinical and scholarly practice.

It is the institution that produced James Hillman’s archetypal psychology, Fanny Brewster’s Africanist depth psychology, and Clarissa Pinkola Estés — and that has trained generations of clinicians for whom depth psychology is not a specialty but a formation.

Founder Andreau Charles’s doctoral training at Pacifica is not a credential appended to a practice. It is the ground from which the practice grows — the formation that makes it possible to work with the unconscious psyche as a clinical reality rather than a metaphor, to hold the full ancestral and cultural dimensions of what patients bring, and to remain genuinely present to the depth of what arises in the room.

Patients who want to understand the scholarly and institutional context from which this practice emerges are encouraged to explore Pacifica directly.
